Short Biography

Roxane Mesquida was born in Marseille, France. She entered the world of cinema when discovered walking down the street by director Manuel Pradal, who offered her a role in his film “Marie Baie des Anges.” It wasn’t until she was discovered by director Catherine Breillat, however, that Roxane truly made her big break into French cinema. She starred in Breillat’s 2000 film “À ma soeur!”, and it is through Breillat and that film that Roxane felt she truly learned how to act.

Catherine Breillat and Roxane worked together again only 2 years later for 2002′s “Sex Is Comedy”, a fictionalized making-of of “À ma soeur!” and in particular the difficulty of shooting the sex scene. Roxane participated in smaller projects after the film, but it wasn’t until the release of 2007′s “Une vieille maîtresse” that the director and actress united for a third time. Breillat cites Roxane as both like a daughter and a muse to her, and the two have a close personal relationship as well as a working one.

Apart from her work with Breillat, Roxane became known in France for her participation in 2006′s horror film “Sheitan”, where she acted alongside superstar Vincent Cassel.

2010 served as a re-break out year after a few years out of the spotlight, with two films screening at the Cannes Film Festival and its sidebars: “Kaboom”, an American film by cult director Gregg Araki, and “Rubber”, an off-beat indie horror-comedy by musician Quentin Dupieux. Despite the niche appeal of both, they were very well-received and Roxane emerged the dark horse of cinema’s It Girls.

She has some exciting upcoming work on the international scene as well: “Kiss of the Damned” by Xan Cassavetes, and a recurring role in season 5 of US series Gossip Girl. Roxane has had the opportunity to do some wonderful movies in her native France since she was a young girl, and now as an established actress her dream to work with great directors worldwide is also blooming.

Roxane currently splits her time between living in Paris, France, and Los Angeles, USA, and although now a veteran actress she is still a rising star worth keeping an eye on. She once declared she would rather babysit than take on a bad film for the sake of the money, and if one thing is for certain it is that her future in cinema will continue to involve brave, challenging roles that set her apart from the rest.
